Green Building & Energy Efficiency

The Bowles Group is committed to being an environmentally conscious contractor.  Although we work a lot with traditional building materials, we encourage our customers to choose low-maintenance, affordable, and recyclable building products.  For example we build a lot of traditional decks using pressure treated pine or cedar.  However, some customers opt to go with the more environmentally conscious choice of composite lumber.  Concider “Going Green” on your next remodeling project!

Energy Efficient Windows & Doors

Replacing old windows with low-emittance (Low E) windows is a very popular option for many homeowners who are committed to becoming more energy efficient.  Low-E glass has a special coating that reflects infrared light which helps keep homes warmer in winter months and cooler in summer months. (See Figure Below)  Newer windows also have two panes of glass, as opposed to the traditional single pane glass windows.  Double paned windows consist of two glass panels set in a frame separated by a small ½ inch gap.  This gap has nontoxic argon or krypton gas imbedded in between the two panes of glass which actually insulates the house from the outside elements.  Double pane windows also provide noise reduction, ease of cleaning, and protect items in the house from sun damage.

Your front door provides the first impression to your home, so appearance is the most important factor to most homeowners.  However, manufactures have introduced new doors that are both energy efficient and appealing.  If the door has a small window, it should always be a double paned Low-E glass.  Some new frames also have a magnetic strip to create a tighter seal to reduce air flow.  Among the best doors available are doors that have a polyurethane foam core which help insulate the door.

Energy Star Appliances - Tankless Water Heater

Did you know that the average family spends between $400-$600 every year on water heating expenses?

Replacing old appliances with energy star appliances like a new tankless water heater will greatly decrease a household’s annual energy cost.  Tankless water heaters are energy efficient because they heat only the water that is needed and they also provide a continuous flow of warm water.  From warm showers to clean cloths, every household has high demands for their water heater.  If your home still has a traditional water heater, it may be time for an upgrade.

Government Tax Incentives

The government is offering its best incentives ever to try to help make more homes energy efficient. As a homeowner you can take advantage of a Federal Income Tax Credits of 30% on qualifying items (up to a total credit of $1,500 per year).  In addition to these tax savings, you will reap the benefits of an energy efficient home for many years to come with greater comfort and lower utility bills.  Visit energy star to learn more about the government program.
